Howdy!
I’m Jack, a young artist and lighting designer based in Chicago, Illinois, and originally from Reading, Massachusetts.
I’m currently a Service Technician with Barbizon Lighting Company.
I love dogs, beaches, going to concerts, reading, traveling, hiking, camping, skiing, not skateboarding, listening to music, learning new things, being a mentor, seeing / creating theatre, and my friends and family!
My Work in Theatre:
I’m primarily a Lighting Designer and Technician, but I’m a well rounded theatre maker and stage technician. I’m very passionate about live entertainment, particularly musicals, plays, and concerts.
As a designer, I use light to shape experiences and stories. I’ve helped create lighting for 50+ plays and musicals so far, with 25+ of those leading as Lighting Designer.
Other roles I’ve held in theatre include assistant director, sound mixer & technician, props crew, fly crew, usher, technical director, spotlight, assistant designer, and master electrician. I’ve also designed lights for an assortment of events and venues, including dance recitals, karate exhibitions, graduations, banquet ceremonies, nightclubs, and cabarets.
I really enjoy working in theatre because I get to use both my creative brain and problem solving brain to fulfill artistic and technical needs of shows, creating stories for audiences to enjoy!
Education:
I earned my BFA in Theatre Arts from The Theatre School at DePaul University. I spent my 1st two years as a Lighting major and my 2nd two years as a Theatre Arts major, which expanded my areas of focus.
At DePaul I studied things such as directing, acting, creative facilitation, storytelling, arts entrepreneurship, drawing, painting, writing, animation, musical theatre, immersive entertainment, script analysis, theatrical history & theory drafting, stagecraft, scenic construction, rigging, welding, audio, projections, music history & theory, art history & principles, visual composition, media ethics, financial planning, neuroscience, and of course lighting design & technology including optics & electricity.
I also practiced my technical skills by doing lighting design, electrician work, crew, and assistant directing work on 15+ Theatre School productions over my four year program.
My interest in theatre started at Reading Memorial High School where I was an active leader in the technical side of our drama club for 16 productions, as well lighting designing for several more shows for other schools and summer camps.
Fun Facts:
I can solve many variations of Rubik's Cubes
I love roller coasters and theme parks
My favorite color is purple
My Mission:
I use light to shape perception, enhance environments, and create memorable experiences for audiences.
I uplift my fellow artists, helping to create a safe and comfortable work environment.
I bring knowledge, empathy, and passion to every project I work on at any scale.
I collaborate intimately with directors to achieve their artistic vision, and with technicians to bring complex ideas to life.
I love theatrical experiences, and hold a strong belief in the healing power of art.
